چکیده :
Background and Aim: Childhood overweight and obesity is a worldwide issue. Studies have shown that children with autism were more prone to unhealthy body weight status as compared to children with typical development. This study aimed to determine the association between obesity and overweight and their relationship with macronutrient intakes among children with and without autism. Methods: This case-control study was conducted on children suffering from autism within the age range from 3 to 11 years. The total participants of this study included 50 cases and 100 controls. Dietary intakes were collected using a 168-item validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. Children with having a BMI equal or above the 85th percentile were considered overweight/obese. Macronutrient intake was compared in children with and without autism according to having or not having overweight/obesity in each group. Results: The mean of BMI in autistic children and healthy children was 19±2.13, 15.92±1.82 respectively and frequency of overweight and obesity was statistically significant between two groups (P=0.001). Totally, the macronutrient intakes except protein were in autistic children significantly higher than healthy children; energy intake (2118.06±401.76 vs. 1424.69±204.76), protein (45.45±10.09 vs. 46.92±6.66), Carbohydrates (247.38±57.64 vs. 138.41±29.89), Saturated fats (27.52±5.76 vs. 23.63±4.13), MUFA (39.65±3.24 vs. 28.08±4.09) and PUFA (28.25±7.35 vs. 18.36±3.24) (P<0.001). In addition, energy and Carbohydrates intakes in overweight/obese in autistic group were significantly higher than normal group (p<0.05), but there were no significant differences in any of the macronutrients in the control group between overweight/obese and normal children (p>0.05). Conclusion: Nutritional intervention programmers in improving nutrient adequacy and regular anthropometric measurements are recommended to be carried out in order to improve nutritional status of children with autism.
