چکیده :
Abstract Background and Aims: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a major global health problem and has become the most common cause of chronic liver disease in children in most industrialized countries, approaching 10% of the general pediatric population and 35% of the obese pediatric population. The unique histological features in children suggest that children and adults may differ in etiopathogenesis, as children show greater vulnerability to genetic and environmental factors. Given the importance of prevention for the management of NAFLD, this study aimed to investigate the risk factors for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in children in order to prevent the progression of this disease in children. Materials and Methods: In this review study, first, articles that contained one of the words Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, Chronic liver disease, along with one of the words Children, Child in the time period 2020-2025 were searched in Scopus, PUBMED, and Google Scholar databases. We obtained a total of 338 articles. Then, 27 articles were used for the final review. Results: Studies have shown that the exact mechanisms of NAFLD in children are still not fully understood. It is believed that a combination of genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors play a role in its pathogenesis. Risk factors include sedentary behavior, unhealthy eating habits, stress, and certain genetic predispositions. NAFLD is strongly associated with central obesity and other metabolic diseases, including metabolic syndrome, and type 2 diabetes. Conclusion: Timely diagnosis, comprehensive assessment, and early intervention are essential for managing NAFLD and preventing its long-term complications. In addition, obesity prevention plays a critical role in addressing the NAFLD epidemic among children. Therefore, public health initiatives, educational programs, and policy changes are needed to promote healthy eating habits, physical activity, and overall health from an early age. Keywords: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, childhood, risk factors.
