چکیده :
Obesity as a possible risk factor for the occurrence of pilonidal cyst disease in children Sina Karimipour, Babak Sabet (M.D) Department of Surgery, Shahid Modarres Hospital, Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, Iran. Introduction: Sacrococcygeal pilonidal sinus disease (PSD) is an acquired disease caused by a number of conditions. One theory argues that body hairs entering hair follicles in the natal cleft elicit a foreign‐body reaction (4) Pilonidal sinus illness is becoming more common in children and teenagers. (2) Obesity may contribute to illness development and recurrence, either directly or by increasing its impact of other risk factors. Body mass index, or BMI, is an objective measure of obesity based on height and weight. (5) Because the intergluteal groove is deep and wet, especially in overweight people, increased weight has been recognized as a risk factor for the development of PSD. (1) This study aimed to utilize body mass index (BMI) as an objective measure of obesity to determine the association between BMI and the incidence of PSD. Method: Patients under the age of 13 who had PSD surgery at the Noor wound clinic between 1400 and 1401 were included in this retrospective analysis. A total of 17 patients were chosen. The patients' height, weight, age, and gender were recorded and their BMI was assessed. Results Ten of these patients (58.8%) were overweight or obese based on their BMI-for-age. Of them, six (35.2%) experienced mild to moderate postoperative complications, including discomfort (n=3), itching (n=4), and purulent discharge (n=2). Three individuals (17.6%) with a BMI considered overweight experienced a recurrence of symptoms. No early or late problems occurred in people with normal weight, and no recurrence occurred in patients with normal BMI. Conclusion: Our data indicate that a high BMI in children is a substantial risk factor for the development of PSD symptoms and complications following surgical therapy. Key words: Sacrococcygeal pilonidal sinus disease, body mass index (BMI), Obesity
