چکیده :
Background and Aim: Obesity is a chronic medical disease that can lead to several health disorders. however, meta-analyses have reported mixed results. The current umbrella meta-analysis was conducted to evaluate the available evidence and provide an accurate estimate of the overall effects of the association between ultra-processed food consumption and the risk of overweight/obesity and body fat in school-age children. Methods: PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar databases were searched until March 2025. Data screening and extraction were done by two independent authors. Meta-analysis was performed using the random effects model and using STATA software. In addition, the included studies’ quality and the certainty of the evidence were assessed using the AMSTAR2 and GRADE tools, respectively. Results: The present umbrella review includes eight meta-analyses comprising 22 observational studies (six cohorts and 16 cross-sectional) and 84430 unique children. Combining the results of the observational studies included in the meta-analyses showed that high consumption of ultra-processed foods increases the odds of being overweight (OR=1.271, 95% CI (1.132, 1.428), p<0.001) and obesity (OR=1.194, 95%CI (1.069, 1.334), p = 0.002) in children. The sub-group analysis revealed that the association of ultra-processed foods consumption with obesity odds was significant in studies with sample size ≥2000 (OR=1.214, 95%CI (1.064, 1.385), p=0.004) and cross-sectional studies (OR=1.189, 95%CI (1.052, 1.344) p=0.005). Conclusion: The results indicate that high consumption of ultra-processed foods was associated positively with odds of overweight and obesity in school-aged children. These findings suggest that dietary patterns with low consumption of ultra-processed foods may be helpful in the prevention of childhood overweight and obesity.
