چکیده :
Background and Aim: Childhood and adolescent obesity is a rising global health concern, linked to increased risk of chronic diseases in adulthood. Omega-3 fatty acids have been proposed as a potential intervention due to their anti-inflammatory and metabolic benefits. To evaluate the effect of omega-3 supplementation on obesity indices particularly body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), and body fat percentage in children and adolescents. Methods: A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published up to January 2024. Studies included children and adolescents aged 2–19 years receiving omega-3 supplementation, with outcomes reported for BMI, WC, or body fat percentage. Effect sizes were pooled using a random-effects model, with results expressed as Weighted Mean Differences (WMD) and corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CI). Heterogeneity was assessed using the I² statistic. Results: A total of 12 RCTs involving approximately 980 participants met the inclusion criteria. Omega-3 supplementation led to a modest but statistically significant reduction in BMI (WMD: −0.45 kg/m², 95% CI: −0.82 to −0.08, p = 0.017) and waist circumference (WMD: −1.36 cm, 95% CI: −2.47 to −0.25, p = 0.015). Although body fat percentage tended to decrease, the results were inconsistent and not statistically significant across all studies. Heterogeneity was moderate to high (I² = 62%), likely due to variation in study populations, duration, and dosage. Conclusion: Omega-3 supplementation may offer modest benefits in reducing obesity-related indices such as BMI and WC among children and adolescents. While findings are encouraging, more high-quality and long-term studies are needed to confirm the clinical significance and establish optimal supplementation protocols.
