چکیده :
Background and Aim: Functional constipation has always imposed a high cost on the healthcare system, children, and their caregivers. The condition leads to a decrease in quality of life, reduced academic performance, and psychological issues, including aggression, anxiety, depression, and increased emotional reactivity. Additionally, the continuous rise in childhood overweight and obesity rates, and the associated risk of developing chronic diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and functional gastrointestinal disorders, which affect overall quality of life in both childhood and adulthood. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the association between functional constipation and overweight/obesity in children. Methods: This cross-sectional (descriptive-analytical) study was conducted on all children aged 4 to 18 years who visited the pediatric endocrinology clinic at Amiralmomenin Hospital in Semnan during the 2020-2021 period. After collecting personal data through a checklist and conducting interviews with parents, the diagnosis of functional constipation was made according to the Rome IV criteria for children over 4 years of age, along with other questions included in the checklist designed for this study. Data were analyzed using the Chi-square test with a significance level of less than 5%. Results: In this study, 364 children aged 4 to 18 years were examined, consisting of 166 boys and 198 girls. The overall prevalence of functional constipation in the study population was 33.2%, with no significant association with age (P=0.322) or gender (P=0.529). The prevalence of overweight and obesity among the children was 19.2% and 13.5%, respectively. The prevalence of functional constipation in overweight children was 55.7%, and in obese children, it was 57.1%, significantly higher than in children with a normal body mass index (19.1%) (P<0.001). Conclusion: The findings of this study indicate a higher prevalence of functional constipation among overweight and obese children, underscoring the importance of addressing childhood and adolescent overweight and obesity.
