چکیده :
Background and Aim Childhood obesity is closely linked to gut microbiota imbalances, characterized by lower microbial diversity and unusual distributions of key bacterial groups that influence metabolic health. This review examines how probiotic supplementation can alter gut microbiota profiles and its consequent effects on weight management in obese children. The objective is to evaluate the impact of specific probiotics on microbial equilibrium and weight results. Methods: The review consolidates recent findings( from databases such as PubMed, science direct and scoupous) on probiotic interventions involving strains such as Lactobacillus (e.g., L. rhamnosus, L. paracasei) and Bifidobacterium (e.g., B. breve, B. animalis). It considers the effects on microbial composition, metabolic indicators, and weight metrics (BMI, waist circumference). The mechanisms investigated include short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production, the functionality of the gut barrier, the modulation of inflammation, and the regulation of appetite through gut hormones (GLP-1, leptin). Differences in strain specificity, dosage, and the duration of interventions are also highlighted. Results: Probiotic supplementation can restore microbial balance by enhancing beneficial bacteria (e.g., Bifidobacterium, Akkermansia) and decreasing obesity-associated taxa (e.g., Firmicutes). These modifications are associated with reductions in body weight, BMI, and waist circumference, likely facilitated by increased SCFA production, enhanced gut barrier integrity, and diminished inflammation. Some studies indicate significant weight loss, whereas others show changes in microbiota without corresponding improvement in BMI, implying that probiotics might be more effective when combined with lifestyle changes. Conclusion: Specific strains of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium probiotics show potential for modulating gut microbiota and assisting with weight management in obese children. However, their effectiveness depends on the strain, dosage, and duration of the intervention, and optimal outcomes may also require complementary dietary and lifestyle modifications. Further research is necessary to identify the ideal microbial targets and ensure lasting probiotic-induced weight control in children
