چکیده :
Background and Aim: The rise in childhood obesity highlights an urgent need for effective dietary strategies. While gluten-free diets (GFD) are becoming increasingly popular, their impact on obesity remains uncertain. This study aims to explore the relationship between GFD and childhood obesity. Methods: A review study design was employed, analyzing eighteen articles published until 03 April 2025 sourced from PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar. The objective of these studies was to evaluate the impact of a GFD on childhood obesity, with the literature search utilizing keywords such as Gluten-Free Diet, Obesity, and Children. Results: The study found that children on a GFD exhibited mixed results regarding weight management. Some research suggests that a GFD can lead to weight loss, as it encourages healthier eating habits by avoiding processed foods. Additionally, a GFD may help reduce inflammation and contribute to improved metabolic health. Meanwhile, the results of several studies have shown that a GFD may lead to weight gain and obesity, as certain gluten-free products may have higher fat and sugar content while containing lower levels of fiber and protein. This diet can also cause changes in metabolism and the gut microbiome, and all these factors may contribute to increased body mass index and obesity. However a number of articles demonstrate that children on a GFD maintained stable weight without significant changes, which may be due to the low quality of the studies conducted or the use of a balanced diet. Conclusion: The findings indicate that a GFD, when not properly managed, may contribute to childhood obesity. Careful selection of gluten free products is advisable to mentain a healthy weight. Nonetheless, there remain considerable knowledge gaps concerning GFD and the monitoring of adherence to such diets among patients and healthcare professionals. This underscores the necessity for additional research and studies in this domain.
