چکیده :
Background and Aim: Childhood obesity has become a major global health concern, with growing evidence suggesting its role in the development and progression of autoimmune diseases. Obesity-induced chronic inflammation and immune dysregulation may contribute to the pathogenesis of various autoimmune conditions in children. Methods: A comprehensive literature search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Embase databases for studies published between January 2000 and March 2024. Keywords included combinations of terms related to "childhood obesity" and "autoimmune diseases." Observational studies involving children aged 0–18 years were included. Study selection, data extraction, and quality assessment (using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale) were performed independently by two reviewers following PRISMA 2020 guidelines Results: Fourteen studies met the inclusion criteria, encompassing over 75,000 participants across diverse geographic regions. The most frequently reported autoimmune diseases were type 1 diabetes mellitus, autoimmune thyroiditis, celiac disease, and juvenile idiopathic arthritis. Obesity was positively associated with increased prevalence of type 1 diabetes and autoimmune thyroiditis in the majority of studies. Findings related to celiac disease and juvenile idiopathic arthritis were inconsistent .onclusion: Childhood obesity appears to be associated with an elevated risk of certain autoimmune diseases, particularly type 1 diabetes and autoimmune thyroiditis. These findings highlight the importance of early screening and preventive strategies in obese pediatric populations. Further longitudinal studies are warranted to clarify causal relationships and underlying mechanisms.
