چکیده :
Abstract Background and Aim: Obesity is one of the main risk factors for asthma in children and adolescents, and the prevalence of asthma is significantly higher among obese individuals compared to the general population. Several studies have been conducted to investigate the association between obesity and asthma in children and adolescents; however, the advantage of the present study lies in its large sample size. The aim of this study is to investigate the association between the body mass index (BMI) and asthma symptoms in children and adolescents in central Iran. Methods: This cross-sectional study as part of the Global Asthma Network (GAN) was conducted among 7667 children (3414 boys and 4253 girls) aged 6-7 and 13-14 years living in central Iran. A questionnaire that completed by parents was used for collection of data on dietary intake, asthma symptoms and other possible confounders. The relation between body mass index (BMI) and asthma was assessed using logistic regression. Results: The mean age of participants were 10.9±3.35 years. We found that participants with BMI≥25 had 74% higher odds of asthma when compared those with BMI≤18.5 in the whole population (OR=1.74; CI:1.15-2.63; P<0.01). After subgroup analysis by gender, girls with BMI≥25 had 81% higher odds of asthma than those with BMI≤18.5. This association was not found among boys. Conclusion: The findings of the present study showed that BMI can be associated with the asthma in children and adolescents. However, more research, in particular of prospective design, are required to confirm these findings. Keywords: Asthma; Children, Adolescents, Obesity, Overweight
