چکیده :
Background and Objective: Obese children often face physical problems such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and reduced social quality of life. Mindfulness interventions have been considered as a psychological approach to reduce physical symptoms and improve social interactions. This study aimed to investigate the effect of mindfulness interventions on reducing symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome and improving social quality of life in obese children. Research Method: This study was conducted with a quasi-experimental design and pre-test-post-test design with a control group. The statistical population included obese children aged 9 to 13 years with a diagnosis of IBS in Kerman city, of which 36 were selected through convenience sampling and randomly divided into two experimental groups (18 people) and control (18 people). The experimental group underwent mindfulness interventions (including conscious breathing exercises, meditation, and focus on the present moment) for 8 weeks (2 60-minute sessions per week). The research instruments included the IBS Symptom Severity Questionnaire (IBS-SSS) and the Children's Social Quality of Life Scale (PedsQL-Social). Data were analyzed using analysis of covariance (ANCOVA). Research findings: The results showed that mindfulness interventions significantly (p<0.05) reduced IBS symptoms and improved social quality of life in the experimental group. The mean IBS-SSS scores in the experimental group decreased from 215 at pretest to 140 at posttest and social quality of life scores increased from 52.3 to 68.9, while the changes in the control group were insignificant. Also, reduction in perceived stress was identified as a mediating factor in these improvements. Conclusion: Mindfulness interventions can be used as an effective method to reduce IBS symptoms and improve social quality of life in obese children. These findings emphasize the role of mindfulness in managing physical and social problems and suggest that these interventions be integrated into treatment programs for obese children.
