چکیده :
Background and Objective: Obesity in rural children can lead to social isolation and reduced mental health, especially due to limited access to health resources and social activities. Community-based obesity prevention programs have been proposed as a comprehensive approach to reduce these problems and promote mental well-being. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of community-based obesity prevention programs on reducing social isolation and improving mental health in rural children. Research Method: This study was conducted with a quasi-experimental design and a pre-test-post-test design with a control group. The statistical population included rural children aged 8 to 12 years with a body mass index (BMI) above the 85th percentile in villages around Kerman city. From this population, 44 children were selected through convenience sampling and randomly assigned to two experimental (n=22) and control (n=22) groups. The experimental group underwent community-based prevention programs (including group sports activities, nutrition education, and interactive workshops with families) for 10 weeks (2 90-minute sessions per week). The research instruments included the Children's Social Isolation Scale (CSIS) and the Mental Health Questionnaire (MHC-SF Children's Version). Data were analyzed using multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA). Research findings: The results showed that community-based prevention programs significantly (p<0.05) reduced social isolation and improved mental health in the experimental group. The mean social isolation scores decreased from 29.4 at pretest to 17.8 at posttest and mental health scores increased from 37.5 to 51.9, while the changes in the control group were insignificant. A decrease in BMI (from 26.3 to 24.7) was also observed as a positive side effect. Conclusion: Community-based obesity prevention programs can be used as an effective method to reduce social isolation and promote mental health in rural children. These findings emphasize the importance of community-based interventions in deprived areas and suggest that these programs be expanded with the support of local institutions.
