How Nutrition and Daily Habits Influence Childhood Obesity: A Review

Abstract Background and Aim: Childhood obesity has been identified as one of the most significant health challenges of the last century, contributing to serious health complications and a decline in life expectancy. Various factors can influence its development or prevention. This review study aims to Identify key nutritional and lifestyle factors influence pediatric obesity. Methods: A literature search was conducted through major databases and from 2015 to 2025 using the keywords "children", "obesity", and "nutrition"; “dietary habits”. Out of 42 articles found, 10 were selected for review. Peer-reviewed studies, meta-analyses, and systematic reviews focusing on children (ages 2–18) and longitudinal studies and large-scale surveys were included. Results: Findings showed that nutritional factors including high intake of ultra-processed foods and beverages (OR = 1.5–2.0) and protective effects of mediterranean diets and fiber-rich foods correlated with pediatric obesity. Lifestyle Habits like sedentary behaviors (>2 hours/day screen time) increased obesity prevalence by 30% and regular physical activity (≥60 minutes/day) reduced BMI z-scores significantly. Conclusion: Childhood obesity is multifactorial, but nutrition and daily habits are modifiable targets. Future research with focus on policy changes (e.g., sugar taxes) and community-based programs are critical for identify long-term impact.
