چکیده :
Background and Aim: Celiac disease is an autoimmune enteropathy of the small bowel due to gluten. Celiac disease also has associations with type 1 diabetes and thyroid disease because they have common genes and pathogenesis. Celiac disease needs to be understood in the context of rising trend in treatment and diagnosis. Methods: In this narrative review, an extensive search was conducted in the PubMed database and Google Scholar search engine using English keywords including Celiac Disease, Autoimmune Disorders, Children. 25 articles were found. After removing duplicates, outdated studies, and irrelevant content, 6 articles published between 2019 and 2025 were selected for analysis and review. Results: It has been found in research that children with CD have a higher incidence of T1D and autoimmune thyroid disease. CD and T1D have most of the genetic risk factors, HLA-DQ2, and this results in immune system dysregulation. Thyroid autoantibodies (anti-TPO and anti-TG) are present in the majority of patients with CD, particularly females, resulting in thyroid dysfunction. In a children's CD study, 27.3% had thyroid disease, of which the majority was hypothyroidism. Furthermore, environmental insults such as infections and prematurity exposure to gluten may influence disease onset but are not yet certain in their contribution. Conclusion: Children with CD are at higher risk for the onset of other autoimmune diseases, particularly T1D and thyroid disease, due to shared genetic and immunologic mechanisms. Autoimmune comorbidities in CD patients should be screened for as a matter of routine to enable early intervention and better health outcomes. More studies are needed to establish the environmental trigger role and improve preventive interventions.
