چکیده :
Abstract Background and Aim: Childhood obesity has emerged as a significant global health issue. There is growing evidence of a strong link between obesity and adverse mental health outcomes. The aim of this study is to systematically explore and map the existing evidence regarding the association between childhood obesity and mental health outcomes. Methods: This study presents a scoping review conducted following the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) methodology to explore the relationship between childhood obesity and mental health outcomes. A comprehensive search was performed across multiple databases, including PubMed, Springer, Scopus, and Science Direct, using targeted keywords such as “childhood obesity,” “mental health,” “psychological well-being,” “depression,” “anxiety,” and “related impacts.” The PRISMA guidelines were employed to ensure a rigorous and transparent selection process of relevant articles. Results: A scoping review of 21 studies out of 2,424 examined the complex link between obesity and mental health. Key mediators include body dissatisfaction, societal stigma, and low self-esteem, which heighten psychological distress. Weight-based teasing and cultural perceptions further influence outcomes, with societal stereotypes intensifying distress. Cultural differences are notable; in Chinese populations, perceptions of attractiveness and health mediate the relationship, whereas in Western societies, life satisfaction is crucial. Socioeconomic status impacts both obesity and mental health, with lower SES linked to higher risks. Developmental stages like puberty influence these dynamics, as higher BMI during adolescence correlates with peer issues and emotional problems. Interventions such as community, school, family, and cognitive-behavioral therapies show promise in reducing depression and boosting self-esteem but face challenges in engagement and scalability. Culturally sensitive, tailored strategies are essential for effective physical and psychological health management. Conclusion: Childhood obesity and mental health share a complex, bidirectional relationship, necessitating integrated strategies. Future research should explore long-term pathways and culturally tailored interventions to promote holistic well-being and reduce disparities in children's development and health outcomes.
