In the Name of God

Over the last decade scientific advances have changed the face of the world rapidly, which is by no means comparable to the world of our fathers. Unfortunately, these advances directly affected and changed the pattern of human life. Changes such as low physical activity due to mechanization, inorganic food consumption and the prevalence of obesity, the rapid spread of pathogens due to the ease of human transmission, the prevalence of addictive substances such as tobacco, alcohol and even cell phones, and etc have increased  the exposure of human to the risk factors for malignancy.

Over the last few decades, we have witnessed an increase in the prevalence of cancers, including pediatric cancers. Accordingly, cancer is the second leading cause of death globally. With an increase in the incidence of cancers and intensification of chemotherapy programs, the various complications of the treatment have also increased significantly, making them one of the common causes of cancer deaths. Therefore, along with chemotherapy, the importance of therapies and supportive care to protect various organs and to take care of the physical and mental health of cancer patients as well as their families become vital.

In this regard, we decided to dedicate the 12th Iranian Congress of Pediatric hematology Oncology to this issue. I hope that discussing and exchanging thoughts among fellow pediatric oncologists, hematologists and researchers, in this area and by promoting supportive care, we will see a reduction in the mortality rate of cancerous children under chemotherapy.

I would like to extend my gratitude to Dr. Aghazadeh, Chancellor of Urmia University of Medical Sciences, and Dr. Mohebbi, the head of the Department of Research and Technology of Urmia University of Medical Sciences for their help and support to make this Congress more effective.
